Country WalksIf you enjoy exploring the great outdoors on foot, the self catering accommodation at The Old School is an excellent base. There are a number of marked trails on your doorstep, including the Dalavich Oakwood Trail through the enchanting Caledonian Forest Reserve and the Avich Falls Walk.

You’re likely to stumble upon a cairn, a standing stone or the site of a pre-clearance village when you go walking in this area. And there’s a good chance you’ll catch a glimpse of some of the local residents – red deer and roe deer, red squirrels, pine martens, foxes, badgers, otters and wildcats to mention but a few. Twitchers will also have plenty to keep them busy here: there’s a myriad of woodland bird species including dippers, finches, gold crest, treecreepers and woodpeckers in the forests around Dalavich. Harder to spot are the pied flycatchers, redstarts, buzzards, and eagles. But there are a pair of osprey just along the loch.

But if all this sounds a little too genteel, then a stay at the Old School holiday apartments also leaves you well placed to go ‘Munro bagging’ – which is to take to the hills and reach the summit of as many of Scotland’s 284 mountains over 3,000 feet (known as Munros) as you feel able. There are16 Munros just over an hour’s drive from Dalavich and four are within half an hour. Take a hip flask and a satellite phone!
